Heated Rice Therapy Bag

I have been wanting a heat pad for awhile now (every 3 weeks or so my lower back kills;) wonder what that could be from!), but I really didn't want to go out and buy one. I found a lovely tutorial on Sew, Mama, Sew. I didn't follow it exactly, but maybe I will next time I make one. Pat wants one of his own now. I like how the bag of rice has a removable cover so I can wash it when it gets yucky. The really nice thing about this is that I spent exactly $2.49 to buy the velcro...I had everything else on hand. The tutorial also explains how to add essential oil to the rice so when it is heated up it smells yummy. This I didn't do because I forgot to get some oil from mi madre. I think I'll go back and put some in. Maybe a Christmas-y smelling one.

Items you will need:

  • 5 lbs. of rice (I used a mixture of jasmine rice and short grain rice because that is what I had)
  • 1/2 a yard of muslin (or any other cotton fabric)
  • 1 yard (or so) of fabric for the outside bag. I used flannel and it is the cutest material eva!
  • velcro
  • essential oil
  • thread
Craft night anyone?

That is such a great idea to have a removeable cover! And that fabric is super cute!
